conVerge: Lynchburg is the first phase of the plan we're forming to accomplish Jesus' mission with our lives. We hope that it can be a meaningful and supportive church community for you as well.
conVerge church is a new church plant in Lynchburg, VA. We are a brand new church with a BIG vision. What would happen if the young and upwardly mobile population of college students in Lynchburg, VA were empowered and equipped to become influential for Jesus? We think a lot of 20-somethings in the area have this desire, but little direction to make it happen. conVerge church plans on changing that. What would happen if we learned to organize our lives around the mission of Jesus, rather than around dreams of mortgages, vacations, and security.
We don’t mean for conVerge church to be only for the college-age and young professionals. Indeed, we want to create a church community where all followers of Christ will be equipped to reach the lost and hurting of Lynchburg with the message of Jesus. However, we also want to be very clear that we do not see 20-somethings as a liability (because, don’t you know, those college students don’t tithe much!), but rather we see them as the church’s greatest resource for reaching this culture. Indeed, “we” are 20-somethings, at least for a little while longer.
Liberty University has long said that its mission is to produce Christian graduates in all areas of business and social life that will go out into the country and “make an impact for Christ. ” What if we actually organized ourselves to do this? What if we actually defined what “making an impact” is? And of course, there are other excellent colleges in the area with young people equally as interested in making a difference in this world. This can and must start right here and now in Lynchburg, before the deceptive trappings of the “American Dream” have had their chance to silence the message of Jesus through our lives.
And while empowering the up and coming generation is certainly our first focus, conVerge church also hopes to form a church community for all those in Lynchburg who wish to learn to form a plan to accomplish the mission of Jesus through their lives. Let us not pretend that there are no people in Lynchburg who are far from God and who need to be introduced to Jesus through meaningful connections with His followers (and that would be us).
